Roller Skating Mechanics

rollerskatingOne of the most popular questions that is asked by people learning how to roller skate has to do with the mechanics involved in roller skating. Many brand new roller skaters find themselves wondering how they can achieve acceleration in a forward motion while they are skating on a surface that is flat. Some new roller skaters believe that skating occurs when the weight of the body is shifted forward, back and forth or side to side in order to create a forward acceleration, but this is not quite the truth. So what is the truth about the mechanics behind the art of roller skating?

When you are skating on a surface that is flat using quad skates or inline skates, the safest and the most efficient way for you to achieve forward motion is for you to utilize side push in conjunction with only a minimal amount of body movement.

If you treat each skating foot as if it were an individual scooter, then the forward motion would come from keeping your body weight over only one skate at a time, the employed skate, while you are pushing to the side and then back using the other skate, which is the free skate. The more control that a skater has while keeping the feet close for the purpose of transferring feet, and the more that the skater is able to keep his or her body over the supporting skate or employed skater, the faster the skater will go and the safer he or she will be.

Skating occurs when a number of different right foot and left foot pushes are completed in a sequence, maintaining the concept of using each foot as if it were an individual scooter in order to generate the right amount of momentum. The only body movement that is required is a very slight shift of the skater’s weight in order to keep the main weight behind the head, the chest and the hips situated above the skate that is rolling.

Rollerblading or inline skating techniques are not difficult to learn, but it does take some practice to perfect moves like these in order to get the most out of the basic mechanics behind the sport. If you are not roller skating in this manner, then you are probably utilizing more energy than you should need to, making your inline skating inefficient. If you want to get the most out of your inline skating habit, you have to make sure that you are getting the most out of the mechanics behind the use of roller skates. When you perfect the art of the basic momentum and mechanics of inline skating, that is when you can effectively graduate into tricks and other skating endeavors to get the most out of what your skates are capable of.

How are Roller Blading and Inline Skating Different?

Rollerblade, Inc. was not responsible for inventing, manufacturing or designing the very first inline skates. However, the Rollerblade Company or Rollerblade, Inc. was so successful in their endeavor to market inline skates and inline skating equipment, that it led to the term “rollerblading” becoming extremely popular when referring to sports involving inline skates. Not only was this popular at the time, but the term rollerblading is still being used today to refer to the sport, even though the official name for the sport of using inline skates is simply “inline skating”.

Regardless of which inline skate manufacturing company is responsible for building a specific pair of inline skates, most inline skates are simply known as rollerblades in this day and age. The name Rollerblade has become the symbol of inline skating for most people, unfortunately overshadowing a large number of inline skate manufacturers as well as leaving out a lot of information pertaining to the history of inline skating and rollerblading. Many people, despite having skated for years, are unaware of the true history of inline skating, attributing the design and invention of inline skates to Rollerblade, Inc. when they are not actually responsible for the design of the sport.

The official name for all rollerblading or for “blading” sporting is actually inline roller skating or inline skating. The correct name for any rollerblades that are manufactured by a company other than Rollerblade, Inc. is inline skates or simply skates, rather than rollerblades or blades. If you are actually using Rollerblade, Inc. brand skates, then you really are rollerblading. If you are using any other type of skates, then the proper description for the sport is skating or inline skating. The difference between typical skating and inline skating is, of course, the arrangement of the wheels on your skates. This is because inline skates are skates where four wheels are arranged in a straight line from front to back. Roller skates or quad skates also possess four wheels, but they are arranged in the four corners of the skate instead.

Learning more about the history of inline skating is a good way to generate an appreciation for the sport. You might be surprised at what you learn about how inline skating sports came to be and how the Rollerblade, Inc company managed to successfully market them to the point where “rollerblading” became the common name for the inline skating sport and the true inventors behind the inline skate fell to the wayside.

Another worthwhile category of skateboarding tricks for you to consider is flip tricks.
You can easily master these types of skateboarding tricks, and then as you build up your own confidence level you will be able to try out other skateboarding tricks as well. The most popular of all skateboarding tricks is the Ollie, which fits into the category of flip tricks. Another type of flip trick is the kick flip. You are going to find a number of more advanced skateboarding tricks fall into this category as well, especially with more rotations than the basic tricks offer as well.

Another category of skateboarding tricks is pressure tricks, which involve placing pressure on different parts of the board such as the nose of the tail. You need to be really precise when it comes to these skateboarding tricks if you want to get them right the first time. Manual tricks also fall along these same basic lines, allowing you to have good control over the board if you are not moving quickly while you are performing them.

If you want your skateboarding tricks to make you feel exhilarated, what you might try is aerial skateboarding tricks. It will take you time to learn how to get the most out of aerial skateboarding tricks, but if you master what these tricks have to offer, they can be truly amazing. Keep this in mind when it comes to learning different skateboarding tricks and getting the most out of what the skateboarding tricks you learn have to offer.

Rollerblading Safety

People from all over the world and all kinds of walks of life can enjoy rollerblading simply because its very nature is fun and easy. Coupled with the enjoyment of the sport of rollerblading, however, you also have some important safety measures that need to be followed if you want to avoid accidents, falls and injuries.

Certain rollerblading situations are going to be beyond your control, and knowing this is important.
However, this does not mean that you should simply throw all caution to the wind. You may have to take a nasty spill occasionally while rollerblading, but you’ll likely only suffer minor scrapes and injuries if you are careful. You may also crash while rollerblading, which can result in a concussion or serious injuries if you are not careful. It is vitally important, as you can tell, that you use the proper rollerblading gear when you go out so that you can either completely avoid these injuries, or at least lessen how badly they injure you when they do happen.

First and foremost, the most important piece of protective equipment for rollerblading that you can have in your arsenal is a rollerblading helmet. You should absolutely never, ever go rollerblading without first securing your helmet properly on your head. It should fit your head adequately and it should be tightly attached in order to protect your head. If your rollerblading helmet is oversized or too tight, it will not help you. Oversized rollerblading helmets are not going to provide any kind of protection whatsoever, and on the other hand small helmets will be too uncomfortable, too tight and may even restrict your vision. The interior lining inside your rollerblading helmet is also important, as you need cushioning and padding in order to maintain protection and comfort.

You also need to make sure that you have the complete package when it comes to your protective gear for rollerblading, meaning that you should also have elbow pads, knee pads and wrist guards in order to keep yourself safe when you go rollerblading.

It is also vital that you learn the basics of rollerblading before you hit the streets. If you want to avoid rollerblading accidents then you need to be willing to practice all of the basics including rollerblading forward, rollerblading backward, stopping, turning and even falling. Do this before you hit the streets, because they are far less forgiving when it comes to crashing or potentially hurting yourself.

Other things matter as well. For example, you need to watch out for potholes and cracks in the road, you need to watch out for water and slippery oil, and you need to watch out for road hazards and road signs. The more aware of your surroundings that you are, the better off you will be in the long run. Rollerblading is not really a dangerous sport, but it can be if you are not careful.

The helmet is protective gear that is specifically designed to keep your head safe. You need to wear your helmet all the time if you want to prevent fatalities and other serious damage. Helmets are not going to guarantee 100 percent safety from harm but what they will do is significantly decrease the possibility that you will sustain a head injury if you fall. You need to make sure that your helmet is properly fitting your head. If your helmet is too big or not big enough, then it will only harm you rather than helping you or protecting you. Small helmets are too stiff and uncomfortable for your head. Large helmets do not properly defend against injuries.

When you go shopping for a helmet, you are going to want to select a style that has groves for good ventilation and a narrowing of the front. Your helmet should be built tough, like ACE Bucky helmets and B2 helmets, which come in a myriad of different styles, models, sizes and colors.

- * Pads: Rollerblader pads such as elbow pads and knee pads are going to be just as vital to your health, welfare and safety as your helmet. If you have suitable elbow and knee pads on, then there is a much lower chance that you will fracture a bone if you fall in an unfortunate way. These protections are capable of supporting you and shielding your major bones and joints when serious accidents happen to occur.

- * Wrist Guards: This is another important piece of gear, functioning to soak up the trauma and shock associated with a fall by protecting your forearms and your wrists. When you stumble or fall, your impulse will be to hand on your hands, which can break your wrists if you are not careful. Wrist guards, then, are vitally important to protecting these fragile and vital bones until you can learn how to fall in such a way that your wrists are not put in harm’s way.

Along with these pieces of safety equipment, it is vitally important that you comply with all of the ethics and laws of the road way at all times. Be sensible and always be aware of your boundaries and your capabilities.

When dealing with removable shields you are going to want to insert the very tin of the straight pin into the C-rings end, which is responsible for keeping the shield in place on the body of the bearing. You should just gently pry away the C ring toward the middle of the bearing and work the pin around the circle. Now you can remove the shield as slowly as you can, making sure that you are not causing damage.

Now place the bearing in a container and flush it with the cleaner to get rid of contaminates. Citrus based cleaners work particularly well for this purpose. Use the toothbrush to remove grime and dirt. If the bearings happen to be particularly dirty, then this step may need to be repeated. Make sure that the solvent is changed with every rinse.

Once the bearing has been cleaned, make sure that it is patted dry gently using a towel that is clean and free of lint. Place the bearings on a paper towel and give them time to air dry. Now make sure that all of the water has had a chance to evaporate away before you move on to the next step in the process.

Once the bearing is completely dry you can add between one and two drops of a high quality lubricant to the bearing’s inside. A little bit of lubricant can really go a long way. Now you should rotate the bearing in such a way that the lubricant is worked into all of the moving parts, and make sure that all of the balls have been completely and properly covered in the lubricating agent for the best results.

Now replace the shield, placing it on the bearing and allowing the C ring to slip back into the groove that is just next to the shield. Now you can work the C-ring’s remaining length gently and slowly along that fitted groove until it has completely and fully snapped back into place. Now you can put your brand new clean bearings right back on your skates. Make sure that you spin them a bit to make sure that the lubricating agent is distributed evenly and to ensure that all of the wheels are spinning as smoothly as possible.

Mistake – Another problem that is associated with braking incorrectly is scissoring your legs insufficiently.

Solution - When you scissor your legs insufficiently, meaning that you are not allowing your legs to scissor enough, you are going to increase rather than decrease the tendency to fall down, either forward or backward. What scissoring is, is the process of sliding the braking leg in a forward direction while sliding your other leg in a backward direction. As you slide the braking leg forward, you should be attempting to keep all of your legs on the ground so that you do not accidently engage the brake prematurely.

As you allow your legs to scissor, the heel of the braking skate should be approximately 6 inches before the toe of the other skate, which is going to provide you with an increased level of stability so that you will be prevented from falling down.

Mistake – Leaning on the skate that is not your braking skate is another type of braking mistake that people often perpetrate without intending to.

Solution – If you put too much weight on the non-braking skate, you are going to end up causing yourself a great deal of frustration when it comes to learning how to brake and stop properly. If you end up putting too much weight on the skate, then you are not going to stop, but rather you are going to end up turning yourself into the direction of the braking skate.

If you want to avoid this issue, then you are going to want to keep the weight on the braking skate, allowing it to hold you while you are sliding it forward. Make sure that your feet are both as close to one another as possible to the point where they are nearly touching. Then, when you go to slide the braking foot forward, you should make sure that it is not going out on the side. This should have you end up going in a straight line without putting your weight on to the wrong skate in the process.

Mistake – The final mistake that is associated with braking while skating is planting your feet in too wide of a stance when you are attempting to brake.

Solution - If you plant your feet apart too far, then you will not be able to put the maximum weight on the braking skate. You need to avoid positioning your feet and legs apart too far to make sure that you avoid becoming unstable as a result. Keep your weight behind the braking skate rather than putting yourself in too narrow of a line.

How to Rotate Inline Skate Wheels

Why you should rotate your inline skate wheels

If you have been riding your inline skates for any decent amount of time, then you have probably noticed that your wheels do not wear evenly. The inside edges wear down, and for most people, the rear wheels wear down much quicker than the front ones do. Rotating at proper intervals helps slow this process, making your wheels wear more evenly, and last longer.

When you should rotate your inline skate wheels

If you are reading this, chances are you are new to inline skating, or have never taken the time to learn everything you should about your inline skates. There are a lot of factors that can change the timing for when you will want to rotate, the main ones being wheel hardness, and how often you ride. If you know what hardness of wheel you prefer and always skate for the same amount of time each day, then figuring out a rotation schedule will be much easier.

There are actually three different strategies that you can consider when it comes to rotating your wheels, which are:

  • The first is to keep things relatively simple by rotating the same exact wheels in the same exact manner every time you do this.
  • The second process is to turn the wheel rotation process into an all day kind of project, which is really only ideal when you enjoy messing around with your wheels.
  • The third and final method is a reasonable sort of middle ground, and so it is recommended option for rotating your skate wheels.

Lets look at the conventional strategy, which involves rotating your wheels from 1 to 3 and 2 to 4. This is the system that many manufacturers of inline skates recommend because it keeps things simple. Flip the wheels over so that they are on the opposite edge. The front wheel goes to the middle back, the middle front wheel goes to the back, the middle back wheel goes to the front, and the back wheel goes to the middle front.

If your skates have five wheels, then the front goes to the middle back, the middle front goes to the back, the middle goes to the front, the middle back goes to the middle front and the back goes into the middle.

If your skates only have three wheels, then the front goes to the largest wheel number one, the middle goes to the smallest wheel and the back goes to the second largest wheel.

Pretty easy, right?

Practicing these techniques will help you brake properly so that you learn how to stop without having to throw yourself to the ground in the process.

Mistake -
One of the problems that are associated with braking mistakes is when you do not bend your knees enough.

Solution - The solution here is to do whatever you possibly can in order to avoid allowing your knees to lock. Instead, what you should be doing is loosening up so that you can keep your knees just slightly bent.

If you do not bend your knees enough, then you are going to be unstable, and as a result your brake is not going to work as efficiently as it should. Bending your knees is going to accomplish two things. First of all, it is going to lower your center of gravity, which is going to make you feel more stable and therefore less prone to falling down. Secondly, it is going to allow you to slide the braking skate in front of the other skate to improve your braking ability.

Mistake - Another one of the problems that are associated with braking mistakes is when you lean too far forward when you are braking.

Solution - When you lean too far forward, what this does is poses an issue that is quite similar in nature to when you do not properly bend your knees during braking. What it is going to do is make your brake inefficient if not completely useless. Rather than leaning in a forward direction, you should be keeping your brake straight and you should be positioning your rear end so that it is closer down to the ground.

Your weight should absolutely be positioned in a way that has it just behind the heel brake. You can achieve this position by bending your knees, but just make sure that you are not also lending forward at the same time. Bending your knees is going to create a tendency for you to lean forward, but avoid this at all costs if you want to be able to brake properly. If you lean forward, what you are going to end up doing is throwing yourself off balance, rendering your brake inefficient and possibly throwing yourself to the ground rather than stopping properly. Remember that you are skating, not trying to be superman.

Braking correctly while wearing inline skates is not something that has to be difficult, and it does not have to be terrifying either. Here is a quick and dirty tutorial on how you can brake using inline skates.

Preparation

When you find that you need to brake, the very first step in the process is going to be for you to prepare yourself by way of falling into a ready position. This position requires for you to position your skates a couple of inches apart, parallel to one another. You are also going to want to bend your knees just slightly, keeping your back as straight as you can. What this is going to do is allow for you to shift your center of gravity slightly lower, reducing the chance that you will fall while completing the next few steps in this process. Additionally, you are going to want to begin to extend your arms just lightly out in front of you. There are two reasons why extending your arms is important. Not only will it keep you from tipping backward, but it will also make it possible for you to catch yourself if you should happen to fall forward.

Brake Skate Moves Forward

Once you have managed to prepare yourself by putting yourself in the position for braking, the next step is going to be for you to move the braking skate in front of you. It is important for you to resist the temptation to lift up your toe on your braking skate during this point because if you do this, then you are going to engage the brake before you are supposed to. If you engage the brake before you are supposed to, then you are not going to have enough leverage and this is going to make it more difficult for you to stop.

The Tilt, The Friction and the Stop

After you position the braking skate in the right place, you are going to want to lift the toe of that skate up. The degree that you tilt the skate at is going to depend on where the brake is positioned. If the brake is positioned high, then you are going to need to tilt the skate more in order to engage a level of friction between the ground and the brake pad. If you are skating using an ABT brake, then this step will not be the same. Rather than tilting your brake so that it meets the ground, you are going to want to apply pressure to your skate’s cuff to engage the brake arm.
