Braking in Skating

brakingLearning how to stop when you are riding inline skates really is not rocket science, and yet there are many novice skaters that actually struggle when it comes to braking simply because they have an intense fear that they are going to fall. This fear often comes from having to take whatever skate you are braking with, tilting it, which makes the skater feel as if he or she is unbalanced and therefore going to be prone to falling down. Braking correctly while wearing inline skates is not something that has to be difficult, and it does not have to be terrifying either. Here is a quick and dirty tutorial on how you can brake using inline skates.

Preparation

When you find that you need to brake, the very first step in the process is going to be for you to prepare yourself by way of falling into a ready position. This position requires for you to position your skates a couple of inches apart, parallel to one another. You are also going to want to bend your knees just slightly, keeping your back as straight as you can. What this is going to do is allow for you to shift your center of gravity slightly lower, reducing the chance that you will fall while completing the next few steps in this process. Additionally, you are going to want to begin to extend your arms just lightly out in front of you. There are two reasons why extending your arms is important. Not only will it keep you from tipping backward, but it will also make it possible for you to catch yourself if you should happen to fall forward.

Brake Skate Moves Forward

Once you have managed to prepare yourself by putting yourself in the position for braking, the next step is going to be for you to move the braking skate in front of you. It is important for you to resist the temptation to lift up your toe on your braking skate during this point because if you do this, then you are going to engage the brake before you are supposed to. If you engage the brake before you are supposed to, then you are not going to have enough leverage and this is going to make it more difficult for you to stop.

The Tilt, The Friction and the Stop

After you position the braking skate in the right place, you are going to want to lift the toe of that skate up. The degree that you tilt the skate at is going to depend on where the brake is positioned. If the brake is positioned high, then you are going to need to tilt the skate more in order to engage a level of friction between the ground and the brake pad. If you are skating using an ABT brake, then this step will not be the same. Rather than tilting your brake so that it meets the ground, you are going to want to apply pressure to your skate’s cuff to engage the brake arm.

Learning to Skate Faster

The faster that a skater is, the better they will perform on the ice during a game. Speed is a dominant key when it comes to hockey, and there are definitely a number of ways that speed can be improved. Here are three tips that are going to help you learn how to skate faster in no time at all.

1 – First and foremost, you should be optimizing your stride in order to optimize your speed. Skating is a rather finicky thing if you think about it. A slight imperfection in your stride can make a truly large difference in the results that you achieve. When you skate, you should make sure that you are avoiding short and choppy strides. Only your first couple of strides should be quick and choppy in order to get you up to your top possible speed. Then you should be focusing on achieving long and powerful skating strides. You want to keep the entire length of the skate blade on the ice when you are pushing yourself forward for the best possible results.

2 – Next, you should take care not to move your arms side to side. This is a relatively simple step for you to take, and yet many players do not make a point to keep from doing this and it ends up hurting them. When you swing your arms from one side to the next while you are skating, you are bleeding off your energy in the wrong direction – The direction opposite of where you are attempting to move. This is also going to negatively impact your balance control. When you are skating, you should take care to keep your arms brought in close, and you should work on pumping them back and forth rather than side to side.

3 – You should work on your skating capabilities in the gym just as much as you work on them while on the ice. If you are truly interested in becoming faster when skating, then you need to be working on the process in the gym just as well as on the ice. Fitness is one of the most vitally important factors of playing hockey, and skating is absolutely no exception to the rule. The absolute best thing that you can do when you are working out in the gym is to focus on a hockey specific workout routine capable of targeting the muscles that you need to excel on the ice.

Keep these three tips in mind when you are learning to skate faster and you will surely be able to increase your speed.

High Tech Deck Skate Park Choices

Recently there has been some information that skate parks and boards have been undergoing some changes over the years. Many of these changes are very high tech and will change the way that skateboarding is done forever. The materials that are used in skate parks has fueled a whole new interest in the design and building of the best skate parks in the sport.

There are some changes to skate parks in the area of water collection. Many times a hover board park or skate park will serve as a water collection area as well as the skate park. They must have high tech draining, filtration and methods for bringing the water where it needs to be after it is collected in the skate park.

The high tech deck skate park of the future can be an important part of your community. The simple fact is that if your city or town does not have a skate park, kids will skate in areas where you might not want them to be. When the town makes the decision to build a skate park, there is a greater ability to enforce safety rules and make sure that kids have a smaller chance of being injured while skateboarding. This is a great point to bring up to the city when you are lobbying for a skate park.

The skate parks can be designed to increase the fun that a skater will have while at the same time keeping everyone as safe as possible. If you don’t want the neighborhood kids using a vacant parking lot for skating, then a high tech deck skate park is the answer.

The sport has evolved over time to include many innovations in the boards and the tricks that they are able to accomplish. The skate parks have developed over time as well to become a safe place for kids to hang out and try their hand at the tricks that the pros use. It is also a great place to hold exhibitions for professional skateboarders to come and have events that local kids can participate in with their favorite pros.

With a little time and investment, a high tech deck skate park is a worthwhile addition to any community. When kids have a place to go where they can practice their tricks on the skateboard, there will be much less chance of kids skateboarding down city sidewalks creating an unsafe environment for pedestrians.

If your child is skateboarding, make sure that they are wearing the proper safety equipment while they are at the skate park. Helmets, knee pads and elbow pads should be worn to avoid serious injury. Make certain that your child has this equipment while they are at the local skate park.

Roller Skating Mechanics

rollerskatingOne of the most popular questions that is asked by people learning how to roller skate has to do with the mechanics involved in roller skating. Many brand new roller skaters find themselves wondering how they can achieve acceleration in a forward motion while they are skating on a surface that is flat. Some new roller skaters believe that skating occurs when the weight of the body is shifted forward, back and forth or side to side in order to create a forward acceleration, but this is not quite the truth. So what is the truth about the mechanics behind the art of roller skating?

When you are skating on a surface that is flat using quad skates or inline skates, the safest and the most efficient way for you to achieve forward motion is for you to utilize side push in conjunction with only a minimal amount of body movement.

If you treat each skating foot as if it were an individual scooter, then the forward motion would come from keeping your body weight over only one skate at a time, the employed skate, while you are pushing to the side and then back using the other skate, which is the free skate. The more control that a skater has while keeping the feet close for the purpose of transferring feet, and the more that the skater is able to keep his or her body over the supporting skate or employed skater, the faster the skater will go and the safer he or she will be.

Skating occurs when a number of different right foot and left foot pushes are completed in a sequence, maintaining the concept of using each foot as if it were an individual scooter in order to generate the right amount of momentum. The only body movement that is required is a very slight shift of the skater’s weight in order to keep the main weight behind the head, the chest and the hips situated above the skate that is rolling.

Rollerblading or inline skating techniques are not difficult to learn, but it does take some practice to perfect moves like these in order to get the most out of the basic mechanics behind the sport. If you are not roller skating in this manner, then you are probably utilizing more energy than you should need to, making your inline skating inefficient. If you want to get the most out of your inline skating habit, you have to make sure that you are getting the most out of the mechanics behind the use of roller skates. When you perfect the art of the basic momentum and mechanics of inline skating, that is when you can effectively graduate into tricks and other skating endeavors to get the most out of what your skates are capable of.

Air – This is the term that is used to refer to situations where riders are clearing obstacles or jumps.

Alley Oop - This refers to a situation where a trick is being performed in an opposite direction from the direction that the skater is moving in.

Backside - This refers to a situation where a trick or a turn is being executed in a direction that the rider’s back is facing.

Bank - This is any area that is sloped below 90 degrees.

Bearings - There are both inner and outer parts in bearings, and the balls ride on them, making it possible for the wheels to turn.

Blunt - This describes a situation where a trick is being performed and the board’s contact spot with whatever obstacle is being used is the tail area behind the board’s back trucks. The wheels should also be on top of the item in question.

Board
– In skateboarding, this is also known as a deck, and is the platform part that all of the hardware is mounted on to. The most common material used for a skateboard deck is maple laminate.

Boardslide or Railslide - This is a trick that involves sliding on an obstacle or a lip where the underside of the board is the contact point.

Brain Bucket – This is a slang term that refers to a helmet.
