Guide to Choosing a Surfboard

minimalAre you just learning how to surf, or are otherwise looking to purchase a new surfboard? One of the most difficult decisions to make when it comes to surfing is choosing the best board for you. There are a variety of different factors that are going to influence your choice of a surfboard, which range from what types of waves you will be riding, what kind of experience you have, what preferred style of surfing you participate in, and many others. Once you are able to take all of these factors into account that is when you can take the time to look at each surfboard itself.

Surfboards come in a wide variety of different sizes and styles, and they also have a wide variety of different manufacturing processes as well. The main shapes that are used to manufacture surfboards are long boards, mini-mal boards, fish boards, short boards and surfboard hybrids which are made from numerous shapes combined.

The Mini Mal is a board that is used by beginner surfers and advanced surfers alike. These boards are perfect for any person that appreciates the feel of a long board but is looking for an increase in maneuverability. These boards are easier to carry, and they are much more manageable in the water while offering the same ease as a traditional long board. They are ideal for children and smaller adults who are seeking a beginning board as well as experienced long boarders looking for something with more maneuverability.

The Long Board is also a good board both for beginner surfers and advanced surfers alike. The long board is essentially a modern replica of the original surfboards. The long board will allow you to paddle into any waves that you want, hanging ten all the way until you reach the beach. The long board is one of the most popular boards in the water today for good reason. The long board is easy to get started on and it always provides a good time.

The Soft Board is excellent for beginners and intermediate surfers alike, though you will most likely see this one being used by beginners, but advanced surfers often also turn to them when surfing in between flags at the beach. This is the perfect board for you to learn how to surf on, as these boards were designed to increase stability and for easy paddling. These boards have a slick bottom which ensures maximum speed, and it also has smooth rails which ensure easy turning. The soft construction makes sure you don’t get hurt during a spill, either.

The Retro Fish board is intended for intermediate and advanced surfers and is a popular alternative to short boards. This board was originally designed in the 70s, and is a shorter and thicker board than short boards are.

Top Surfing Spots in the World Continued

waveEveryone has opinions and, in turn, preferences, from music, to drinks, to whatever else that you can think of. Surfing is no different when you think about it. Different surfing spots offer up different rides due to the terrain of the ground underneath the water being vastly different from one spot to the next spot. Despite all of this, you will still find that there are a handful of spots around the globe that the majority will agree upon that are a “must surf”, and you would benefit from visiting these choice surfing spots sometime in your life.

The Place: The Banzai Pipeline, in O’ahu, Hawaii

Why: This pipeline offers not only some of the best waves, but also some of the most dangerous in the entire world. This is definitely no place for any beginner surfer to go, because the waves here are so intense that even some pros are unwilling to come surfing here. Although this is by far one of the most coveted and one of the most well loved surfing spots, the danger is something that you simply cannot ignore. There are many surfers that have died here, perhaps more than any other surfing spot across the globe.

The Place: Tavarua, in Fiji

Why: Tavarua is fun because of the secret elements associated with it, and there are two world class breaks here for you to take advantage of. You will also find a breathtaking environment, beautiful scenery and coral reefs to take advantage of. Unfortunately, the island is currently being managed by a private surf camp, and so the only visitors that are allowed here are those that are brought in by invitation. Fortunately, this island does host a number of different surfing competitions all throughout the year, and you can watch them online or on television to take in some of the spectacular views from afar.

The Place: Teahupoo, in Tahiti

Why: This is another site where the annual Billabong World Championships Tour is held. Teahupoo allows experienced surfers to really live out their life-long dreams. These beaches offer waves reaching higher than 10 feet into the air, a truly heavy current and barrels that are just perfect. Because of these absolutely perfect conditions, professional surfers from all over the world visit Teahupoo at least once and many amateur surfers make it their dream to someday visit.

The Place: Mundaka, in Spain

Why: This is definitely one of the more famous surfing spots in all of Europe as well as the rest of the world. Mundaka offers the speed and the waves that every surfer seems to crave. The current is nice and strong, and this makes your ride all that much more smooth and fun, but some danger is also added as well. Mundaka is only ideal for the more experienced surfers.

Snacks for Surfers

potatochipsHave you ever wondered what kinds of foods would be best before or after you go surfing? Keep in mind that you are going to need something that is jam packed full of good energy. Something that is healthy and recommended by a sporting science institute is generally a good way to go, right? There is actually a different way to go with snacks for surfing, and we are going to talk about this:

The two most popular types of snacks that are used for pre surfing and post surfing are actually polar opposites when you think about it. This is not much of a surprise really. The top snack is the banana, because it is an excellent source of protein and carbohydrates and it is an excellent snack for energy, and it can even help to ward off swimming cramps and other aches and pains. The other surprising snack for surfing is tea, believe it or not.

There are a really wide range of different preferences when it comes to surfing snacks. What it really boils down to in a lot of situations is personal taste, so think about that when it comes to choosing the right snacks for your needs.

Different surfers are going to have completely unique tastes when it comes to what foods are best for providing protein, carbs and good energy before a surfing workout and after. Here are some of the top foods that surfers have claimed to favor for their surfing workouts.

  • Bananas
  • Tea, including regular tea, green tea
  • Chocolate, high energy snacks containing chocolate
  • Burritos
  • Dried Fruit
  • Salty Chips
  • Isotonic Drinks
  • Breakfast foods, especially those that are rich in protein like eggs
  • Hot dogs
  • Various types of coffee
  • Homemade sandwiches with plenty of vegetables

There isn’t a lot of information out there on what surfers should be eating, but surfers tend to have plenty to say about what they like to eat. When considering a specific food item as a surfing snack, what you should ask yourself is:

  • How will this food benefit me?
  • What vitamins and minerals will I be provided with?
  • Will this food make me feel heavy or weighted down?
  • Will this food anger my digestive system while I am surfing?
  • Should I save this snack until after I surf?

If you plan on eating something heavy like burritos or sandwiches, you should absolutely make sure that you wait a short while before you go surfing so that you can begin the digestive process. When people go surfing or swimming to soon after they eat, they can cause unwanted stomach cramps and cramps in other parts of the body as well, which can cause accidents on the water.

Surfing 101

surfingIf you are planning on taking up surfing, or just want to brush up on your surfing techniques and skills, you should start with the following list. This surfing 101 list is meant to be a no nonsense beginner’s guide to getting started on the water. This includes safety for yourself, those around you, using your equipment properly and above all else, knowing what you’re doing. Without further ado, here’s surfing 101:

Do not drink any alcohol while you are surfing or just before surfing. When you are surging under the influence of something like alcohol, you are going to be setting yourself up for failure, accident, injury or worse. Drinking alcohol is going to impair your judgment and may even cause your reaction times to slow down which can put you in serious risk of injury.

Make sure that you are aware of other surfers. You need to be aware of who else is in the water at all times. You also need to be aware of the surfing conditions as well as of the location where you are surfing. You should always make sure that you are not taking somebody else’s wave when you are surfing.

Be aware of your limits as well. You should only ever be surfing in the waves that you are comfortable in rather than surfing in waves that can get you into trouble.

Make sure that you are staying in shape, because physical fitness is definitely important when it comes to your health and well being in the water. If you lose your surfboard while you are out on the water, you are going to need to be physically capable of swimming yourself back to shore and this requires being in shape.

Never go surfing within 45 minutes of having eaten a meal. Your body can do some really unexpected things such as causing cramps when you swim this soon after having eaten a meal.

Make sure that you are surfing smart. You need to be aware of when you should be holding onto your board, just as easily as when you should be getting rid of your board. If you are about to have a serious wipeout, then you need to get rid of your board as this is going to prevent you from sustaining many of the injuries that are sustained when you are still hanging onto your board while you are wiping out.

If you find yourself caught in a rip tide, do not panic. When you should be doing instead is paddling parallel along with the beach until you manage to escape the hold of the rip tide.

Make sure that you are always wearing a good sun block product that is water proof as it will keep you from burning from the blistering sun.

Learning How to Duck Dive

duckdiveBefore you can learn how to duck dive, you may need to learn what duck diving is and what it is all about. Any breaking wave that is more than two feet high is going to require that you duck underneath the wave rather than floating right over it, and this is where the duck dive term comes from. Duck diving is not something people really learn how to do when they are first learning how to surf, because most beginning surfers are surfing the smaller waves anyway. In fact, most people that learn how to duck dive do so through necessity because they end up having to tackle a wave that was larger than what they were expecting. Still, it may be a good idea for you to learn how to duck dive before you even learn how to stand up on the board.

This way, when you do encounter a wave that is too large for you to simply float over, you will know what to do rather than having to learn very quickly at the worst possible time through necessity.

As you are padding and approaching an oncoming wave, you should be shooting to have as much speed as you possibly can. Approximately two feet before you make contact with the white water, you need to grab both of the rails, or the side edges of the board, particularly about halfway between the midpoint of the board and the nose, and you should push all of the weight in your upper body onto your hands and your arms until you feel as if the nose of the board is about to go under the water. Now you should point your head down, allowing your body to follow suit.

Once your body has gone just below the surface, the next step in the process is to bend your dominant leg, using the knee of your dominant leg to push the tail of your board under the water. The momentum that you create should be enough for you to be quickly thrust under the wave which is passing quickly over you, only requiring you to be under the water for a short period of time. As the wave begins to pass you overhead, you can let the natural flotation of your board to bring you back up to the surface. Now you should have the necessary skill to paddle yourself to the lineup, or you can paddle up to the next wave and duck dive underneath it as well.

It’s not really a difficult process to learn, but it can go a long way in preparing you for real surfing. Once you know how to duck dive to line yourself up for big waves, you can begin to surf the big ones. Practice this technique until you become comfortable, and then you can go out and tackle the big ones, showing your friends that yes, you really can learn to surf on the internet!

Surfing is capable of being great fun, but there are some precautions one should take as the ocean is not predictable at all.

Some people might think surfing is crazy, but the majority of surfers will say it is more than that. You make a connection with nature. You leave all of your worries behind while you are out riding the waves. The great power and magnitude of the ocean helps to reinforce the basic ideas we have of health and happiness, and what is really important in our lives.

Surfing can be greatly beneficial, both for body and mind. We all pretty much know the effects that surfing can have on the mind, so let us look to the benefits surfing has for the body. As I am sure you can imagine, riding the waves cannot be that easy. You have to be very fit. Where did you think the terms “washboard abs” and “surfer bodies” came from? Surfing provides excellent cardio since you use your entire body. You use your upper body to paddle out, to wade through the water, and to dive through the waves or duck under them. You use your lower body to control the board one you are up on the waves and riding in.

It is not just that surfing keeps one fit, but you must be in great shape in general because you have to carry your body weight. Since surfing is very cardio intensive, it is good for the heart, and helps to boost energy all around. You get good muscle tone, and your endurance increases. It has been said that surfers who live to their 70’s and beyond tend to defy age with ease. This is because surfing is a great stress reducer, helping you to stay young. So in a nutshell, not only is surfing great for your body, but it is also an immensely fun and popular sport that is very addictive. Once you learn to surf, you will never want to stop.

The beaches all along Hawaii, Florida and California as well as Australia all happen to be excellent hot spots for the purpose of surfing. Surfing really has its very own unique culture and a way of life about it. One of the absolute biggest perks associated with surfing is all of the great bonds and the friendships that you can build up all along the way. Surfing is capable of bringing people together and then it simply keeps people together.

Gear Basics for Surfing

surfingSurfing is a sport that does not require the use of a lot of gear, but the gear that you do need is essential. What this means is that it is important that you choose the right gear when it comes to the sport of surfing. There are a number of factors that go into determining that the best surfing gear will be for you, including your level of ability, your location and the climate in your location. A surfboard, a wetsuit and some other accessories are going to be necessary.

There are a wide variety of different surfboards for you to choose from. Long boards, for example, are surf boards that are 9 feet or longer. These are the best types of surfboards for you to choose when you are learning how to surf. They are capable of floating well and they are also capable of catching slow moving waves. Fun boards are shaped much in the same way that long boards are shaped, with wide noses and tails, but they are shorter as they are between 7 feet and 9 feet in length. These are the best boards for long boarders that are trying to move onto something a little smaller, or for full sized adults just beginning to learn how to surf. Fish boards are generally very short in length, but they are wide, which makes them ideal for the progression forward from fun boards. They work especially well in smaller and weaker surfs and they offer a greater amount of maneuverability than fun boards and long boards.

Short boards tend to be best for the more advanced surfers, and they also offer the best level of performance. They also tend to be the hardest surf boards to paddle on, and are not a good surf board for you to learn on. The two main construction types that you can choose from for surf boards are epoxy surf boards and traditional surf boards. Epoxy is quickly becoming popular because it offers a higher level of strength and a longer length, but many of these boards lack the performance and the drive of a standard traditional construction. The fin set up is another consideration that needs to be made when it comes to your surf board. The most popular design may be the tri fin, but there are also twin fin and quad fin set ups which are chosen for fish boards, and single fin set ups that come with long boards.

For colder climates and areas, you are going to need a wet suit. There are two types of wet suits to choose from, a full suit and a spring suit. If the water is sixty degrees Fahrenheit or less, opt for a full suit. You also need a leash for your surfboard and surfboard wax in order to complete your surfing gear kit.
